Clinical Survey and Nursing Care of Children with Shigellosis


Abstract
From March of 1970 to the end of 1972, the author performed clinical survey and nursing care for shigellosis in 93 cases treated at the Pediatrics Service of Kim Chun Provincial Hospital and a Pediatrics Clinic at Kim Chun.
1. Age distribution showed 46 (49.5%) cases from 1 to 3 years old, 6 cases under
1 year old, and 3 cases above 12 years old.
2. Sex distribution showed 53 (57%) male cases and 40 (43%) female cases, giving a ratio of 1.3 1.
3. Seasonal distribution showed 68 (73¡Æ0) cases occurred from June to August. The rest scattered through out the year.
4. A high fever. of 38¡ÆC or above was found in 45 (48.4%) cases. Diarrhea was found in 79 (85%) cases. Blood, muscus or pus in the stool were found in 47 (50.5%) cases. None of the 23 (24.7%) cases which showed neurologic symptoms was suspected of neurologic disease.
Frequency of bowel movement of 8-12 times daily appeared in 35 (37.5%) cases, 4-7 times in 28 (30.1%) cases, more than 12 times in 23 (24.7%) cases and less than 3 times in 7 (7.5%) cases. Dehydration was found in 34 (36.6%) cases.
5. Serious patients were treated with fluids and electrolytes supplied via the scalp vein in the most cases, and ampicillin (50-100mg/kg/day) and colistin (5mg/kg/ day). The others were treated with ampicillin (50mg/kg/day) and nalidicic acid (50mg/kg/day).
6. As for nursing care, isolation technique was practiced. Fluids and electrolytes balance were maintained along with dietary treatment. Materials used were sterilized or burnt up after use.
7. Eighty-nine (95.7%) cases recovered and 4 died.
